About SAA |
||
| South African Airways is Africa's leading airline. Our mission is to be the carrier of choice in the markets we serve. Established on February 1, 1934, South African Airways first took flight as South Africa's national carrier between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Since then times have certainly changed. South African Airways today is a major player in the global village. One of the major thrusts of the airline's vision for the future is continued global expansion in conjunction with strategic airline partners. We understand that today's customers want high levels of customer service, not just on board but also regarding check-in and frequency of flights available to most major destinations. | ||

| Since the early days, South African Airways has
had a reputation for its modern fleet and dedication to front-line aviation
technology. SAA covers an extremely diverse route network, therefore the
airline demands a variety of aircraft to specifically handle the needs
of the various routes. Today SAA has a fleet of 45 passenger aircraft
and 5 freighters, including Boeing 747-400, B747-300, B747-200, B767,
B737 and Airbus A300 and A320. From being an airline which travelled to 70 cities non-stop, or with one stop or one change, SAA is now an airline which serves 503 cities alone or with an alliance partner. Today, through the alliance partnerships, SAA has higher levels of frequency, and has successfully aligned itself with other airlines and their routes, improving service to customers and providing SAA customers with quicker transfer and travel times. Thai Airways International if SAA's code-share partner on the Thailand route, allowing three convenient return services per week between Johannesburg and Bangkok. All services are operated by SAA with Thai Airways participating as the marketing carrier. It is SAA's aim to be the most prominent airline servicing Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, and to be the airline of choice for seamless travel between South Africa and long-haul destinations. SAA aims to continue to connect domestic and regional flights to key intercontinental routes, and to optimise Johannesburg International Airport as a hub to connect Johannesburg to onward destinations efficiently, effectively and safely. | South African Airways first inaugurated
the first scheduled flight from Johannesburg to Bangkok on June 2, 1992.
Later on the airline entered into a code-sharing agreement with Varig
Brazilian Airlines on Hong Kong-Bangkok-Johannesburg route until November
1994 when SAA resumed its own flights to Bangkok. SAA recently renegotiated
its alliances in Asia, and now the airline has two strong alliances, namely
Cathay Pacific and Thai Airways International. Both are successful code-share
partners for SAA along the routes between Hong Kong and Johannesburg and
Bangkok and Johannesburg. The year-on-year Hong Kong traffic is up 70%
in revenues, in cooperation with Cathay Pacific. Thrice weekly services
to Bangkok in cooperation with Thai Airways International has shown 30%
passenger revenue growth. South African Airways see Thailand and nearby countries as an emerging tourist market, and is looking to raise its profile in Southeast Asia. In Thailand, SAA is planning a joint marketing campaign with Thai Airways International to increase awareness of South Africa as a destination. |
